Top Ten Ways to Eat Out Zonefully.
- Try to choose a gourmet French restaurant as portions sizes are smaller and more Zone-like.
- Never go hungry to the restaurant. Always have a small Zoned snack or either a few nuts with a glass of water prior to going to the restaurant.
- Never eat the rolls, especially if you are planning on dessert.
- Order a protein appetizer ie shrimp cocktail balanced with a glass of wine, but remember to count these towards your total meal block allotment.
- Never order pasta dishes.
- Always order low fat protein sources that are steamed, broiled or baked. Beware of fried, pan-fried, or light fried.
- Ask the waiter to replace any starchy vegetables ie potatoes or rice with extra vegetables.
- Drink water rather than soda or fruit juice.
- When the dinner arrives use the hand-eye method as explained in the “Eyeballing Method” section on this site. If the serving size of protein is bigger than the palm of your hand (minus fingers), plan on taking the excess protein home in a “doggy” bag for another meal. Now balance the amount of carbohydrates you plan on eating by the size of the protein portion.
- If you really came to have dessert, then do not eat any carbohydrates (favourable or unfavourable) with your meal other than a small salad. That way you can really have your “cake and eat it too”.
