Top Ten Basic Zone Principles
- Always balance protein, carbohydrates and fats at every meal and snack.
- Always eat a Zone meal or snack within one hour of waking.
- Always eat a small Zone snack approximately 1/2 hour to 1 hour before going to bed.
- Eat at least 5 times a day (the 5 fingers of your hand should remind you to eat at least 5 times a day ie 3 meals and 2 snacks).
- Never let more than 5 hours pass between a meal or snack (3-5 blocks will generally last 3-5 hours while snacks (1-2 blocks) will generally last 1-2 hours.
- Drink at least 64 ounces of water a day (ie an 8 oz. glass at least 8x a day).
- Eat lean low-fat protein sources.
- Eat mostly fruits and vegetables for carbohydrates and treat grains, starches, pastas and breads as condiments (25-33% a meal).
- Take your pharmaceutical grade fish oil.
- Remember Zone living is guilt-free. If you make a mistake, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get back into the Zone with your next Zone meal or snack.
